Peran Usia dan Gender dalam Realisasi Kesantunan Berbahasa Indonesia Mahasiswa

As a social variable, age and gender play an essential role in determining the patterns, flow, and contents of speech acts in any interpersonal communication. This paper reveals the role of age and gender in Indonesian university students’ linguistic politeness. The subjects were 28 students of FKIP-UKI who were grouped into 18-23 years old group and 41-48 years old group. The data was obtained by asking them to fill in a Discourse Completion Test questionnaire and responding to an interview. The results of the analysis reveal some differences in the realization of linguistic politeness among subjects with different age and gender. Younger speakers were inclined to use straighter (more direct) refusal strategy, extensively use slangs, and frequently use informal addresses. In relation to gender, women tended to use indirect refusal strategy and were apt to utilize longer and more detailed explanations as a means to prevent their addressees’ disappointment.
